Hart Voices is delighted to present Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, conducted by Musical Director, Roy Rashbrook, as part of our 50th Anniversary Season.

A jazzy and contemporary work, with hints of Bernstein’s earlier work West Side Story, Chichester Psalms is a hopeful & life-affirming choral masterpiece which is sung in Hebrew and juxtaposes vocal part writing most commonly associated with Church music, with the Judaic liturgical tradition. The piece was commissioned by the Dean of Chichester Cathedral for the 1965 Southern Cathedrals Festival and was composed by Bernstein during a sabbatical from his post as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic. Chichester Psalms received its world premiere in New York on July 15th 1965, and was first performed in the UK on July 31st 1965, at Chichester Cathedral.
